Liverpool end of May 2000 (Home Page)

Here in Liverpool the May Bank Holiday looks like being a slightly soggy affair, as indeed, has much of the month of May.

It has not rained continuously all month. There was a week or two in the middle of the month which was sunny and quite dry. We became frequent visitors to Calderstones park, where we enjoyed the bluebells and tulips. I was careful to water the newly planted Photinia Fraseri. On the triangle of grass where Greenbank Drive joins Croxteth Drive there is a large Horse Chestnut Tree, and the leaves on some of the boughs had begun to turn yellow.

Then the weather changed again and we have had sunshine and showers ever since. It has been hard persuading carefree children leaving for school in bright sunshine that they really do need to take a coat, but they have generally had need of it before 4 o'clock. I have often returned home in the rain at 6 o'clock, to enjoy a beautiful evening walk (or run) by 8 o'clock.

Some evenings have been especially beautiful. Seeing the young green leaves on the trees, rustling in the breeze, catching the evening sun, against a clear brilliant blue sky, has been a wonderful experience.

On 1st May there was very little colour in our garden, but this changed quite rapidly. The plumbago, or Chilean potatoe plant, is sporting delicate blue flowers in profusion, and forms an arch over the back alley with the neighbours' Laburnum. There are red and yellow roses, white rock roses in abundance, and large bright clematis blooms, as well as many others, that Ann could describe in more detail.
