The Horse and his Boy by C S Lewis

This is a delightful shortish story, of the escape of two children and two horses from the tyrrany of Tashbaan in the south to the freedom of Narnia and Archenland in the north.
Their own flight across the desert has an extra urgency, because of what they hear in different palaces in their separation as they pass through the capital.
Queen Susan of Narnia (who we met in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) has rejected the offer of marriage from Prince Rabadash, who is now intent on kidnapping her forcefully and overrunning Archenland into the bargain.
Their part in warning King Lune, what they learn about themselves and each other, and the part played by the lion Aslan come together to make this an enjoyable and satisfying tale.
